Spark Nano 3.0 Review
The Spark Nano 3.o is the newly released version of the gps tracker. This tracking device was made popular by featuring on wired magazine as the number one choice in gps tracking tracking technology and it also featured on one of the episodes of CSI Miami. That’s all great but what can it do for me, I hear you ask?
Spark Nano 3.0 Features
First of all, let’s look at the features. There are some some distinctive features this gps tracker has.
Small & Compact
Measuring 3″x2″ inches, this device is small. It will fit into the palm of your hands. Having a gps device that is small and discreet is ideal. You want the device to be unnoticeable so that you can get the tracking you need without anyone really knowing. The last thing you want is a large chunky tracker that is easily visible and can be taken out. Also just because a tracker is small, you don’t want to compromise on data accuracy.
Tracking Capabilities
From personal use, I can say the tracking capabilities are good. You can track viewing maps and data using the gps tracking platform that provides accurate enough information. The tracking platform is provided by brickhouse security, a well known company in the surveillance retail industry.
The following video describes how you will be tracking using interactive maps.
What Can I Use The Spark Nano 3.0 Tracker For?
Because it is a real time tracker, i.e. provides live data and as mentioned before it is fairly small you can use the device for various reasons. I use it as a car tracking device but you can use it for the following;
- Child tracker
- Spouse tracker
- Teen tracker
- Car or other Vehicle tracker
- Asset tracking for example, Jewellery
- International tracking
- Business, Employee tracking
Businesses may find the spark nano gps tracker useful especially for tracking vehicle fleets. Spouse tracking has become popular over the years. Instead of hiring a personal investigator, people are relying on gps trackers to keep tabs on suspected cheating spouses.
30 Day Battery Life
The device comes with a standard 30 day battery life. You also have the option of buying a 6 month battery pack. The cost is an extra $200 USD which is fairly expensive. Personally, I did not go with a 6 month battery pack as I didn’t need one. If you are a business and need long term tracking capabilities without charging then you would most probably opt for the 6 month battery option.
Geo-Fence alerts
The spark nano 3.0 tracker comes with the geo-fencing feature. You basically set a pre-defined area the tracker can travel in. If it ventures outside that area, you receive alerts via text or email alert. This is pretty good especially when you have a teen that borrows your car and drives somewhere they have not told you about. Keeping tabs on them became a little more easier.
Emergency SOS Button
If you are planning to get the tracker for your child, the spark nano tracker has a built in SOS button. If your child presses the panic button, an alert will be sent out to you and those on the contact list you have specified. I think this is a very good feature, knowing your child can send you a distress signal and you can pin point the location of where they are.
Solid Design?
For a small gps tracker it is fairly tough. It has survived heavy rain once so I was pleased with that. Having said that, I wouldn’t intentionally start dropping the device on hard surfaces!
Accuracy
Compared to the previous spark nano trackers, the 3.0 version is quite accurate. I have tested it out and the accuracy range is between 10-13 feet.
Cold Start Up
For those of you that have never owned a gps tracker before, a cold start up time is when the device is started up the first time after a 6 hour period. My spark nano 3.0 takes around half a minute to warm up. You need a device to start up quickly especially if you are running a business with a lot of fleet.
International Option
The tracker also can be purchased for international tracking. The device reports data using a cellular GSM network. For international customers cellular data is not provided in the service plan costs.
Costs
The good news is the device comes pre-activated. On previous models you would have had to pay an activation fee. This has now gone, there’s no activation fee. Besides paying for the unit price, you will need to pay a monthly service plan charge. For a 10 minute tracking update interval time, the cost is $14.95 USD per month, a 5 minute update interval time $19.95 USD and a 1 minute interval update of $29.95 USD. At the time of purchase you will also need choose which service plan you want. Personally I went for the 10 minute service updates which is enough for me.
I am always on the lookout for some good deals. If you do decide to go for the spark nano gps tracker now, you can get FREE service plans based on what you choose at the time of purchase until January 2012.

Hidden Costs?
There are no hidden costs. You are charged for the device for example, $199.95 and then for one of the service plans. When you purchase the spark nano 3.0 tracker, you are agreeing to the monthly service fees you choose. You can cancel the monthly service fees before the 20th of the month to avoid being billed for the following month. In my opinion only purchase the spark nano tracker if you are serious about owning a real time gps tracker. For more cheaper options you could buy passive trackers. If you do decide to go for the device you need to note, there is no refund on the device or service fees. That is a negative point but like I said you need to make sure this is the device you really want and need!
As previously mentioned, only go for the device if you are serious about tracking someone or something in real time. Compared to other gps trackers in it’s price range, the Spark nano 3.0 is very competitive in terms of features, function and overall use. I have purchased from Brickhouse security before and I can say the customer service is above average.
